Report: Everton actually wanted to sign English winger Pep Guardiola says is 'so good'

Everton tried to sign winger Nathan Redmond from Southampton during the summer transfer window.

The Athletic report that the Toffees were one of the three Premier League clubs who tried to land the one-cap England international before the deadline.

Newly-promoted Bournemouth, who recently sacked Scott Parker, and Wolves both showed an interest in the wideman as well.

But he now looks set for Turkey, with Besiktas the current favourites to sign him in a move which would see him link up with Dele Alli.

Everton wanted Redmond

Fenerbahce and Galatasaray have also apparently made official bids for the Southampton man, and the club are not expected to stand in his way.

That indicates that a deal could have been there to be done if Everton pushed harder to get Redmond through the door this summer.

In the end, Everton got the firepower through the door they needed in the shape of Neal Maupay and did not need to find a replacement for Anthony Gordon.

Redmond has lost his way somewhat of late, but he has been in and around the England picture under Gareth Southgate.

He made his only England appearance against Germany in March 2017, and has also been praised by Pep Guardiola, who gave him some very public advice later that year.

“I was telling Nathan Redmond how good he is at the end. Southampton have some super talented players, Redmond is so good one against one,” he said.

“But they didn’t want to play, they were time wasting from the ninth minute. I just wanted them to play.”
