Respected Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has claimed on his website that Serie A side Torino have sent representatives to London in order to thrash out a move for Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira – despite interest from Atletico Madrid.
Torreira, 24, has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta. The likes of Granit Xhaka, Dani Ceballos and Joe Willock are above the Uruguayan in Arteta’s thinking – while the return of Mo Elneny has pushed Torreira further away.
According to ESPN Uruguay, Torreira has rejected both Fiorentina and Torino to hold out for Atletico Madrid. But it appears that Torino are still keen on luring him back to Italy – despite having three years left on his £75k-a-week contract (Spotrac).
The latest report from Pedulla states that Torino have sent representatives to London as they look to win the race for the ex-Sampdoria man – though it remains clear that Atletico are leading the race, especially with Arsenal wanting Thomas Partey.
TBR’s view – Torreira a good player, but Arsenal can do better
Early signs this season show Arsenal have already done better. Bringing Ceballos back on loan for another season is a major boost for the Gunners, while Elneny’s early form since his return from a Besiktas loan has been excellent.
The return of both players have seemingly pushed Torreira – and perhaps Matteo Guendouzi – towards the exit door. If the Gunners can raise a decent fee for his services, then a move for Partey or Houssem Aouar could be arranged.
