Report: Erik ten Hag could bring Harry Kane's 'special' Spurs teammate to Manchester United, he's a big fan

Manchester United could sign Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham during a summer when he is expected to leave north London.

That is according to a report by the Athletic, who note that United’s new manager Erik ten Hag has tried to bring the winger to Ajax multiple times.

The 24-year-old, branded as a player with ‘special characteristics’ by Antonio Conte, was very close to leaving Spurs in January with Ajax heavily linked with a move for him.

That would have seen ten Hag and Bergwijn work together and now the Dutch manager is taking over a club which Ralf Rangnick has said needs two new forwards in the summer.

Manchester United could sign Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham

Their report reads: “One solution could come from within the Premier League, with incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag a fan of Bergwijn.

Ten Hag has been Ajax boss during their multiple attempts to sign the player, though there is nothing concrete from United at this point.

There is interest from more English clubs and continental Europe’s other big leagues.

It was recently reported that some at Tottenham feel that the club should have sold Bergwijn during the January transfer window.

Why didn’t they? It seems Spurs felt it would have been a PR disaster after Bergwijn netted twice in the stoppage time comeback win over Leicester.

As it turns out, Bergwijn has not built on that and his Tottenham career has faded away and the report says he is expected to leave this summer.

The move would not get United fans especially excited now, but ten Hag signed Dusan Tadic and Sebastien Haller when their Premier League careers were on the wane.

He transformed them and United do need to change their transfer policy, with ten Hag needing total control to reshape the club in his image.
