Celtic could earn themselves a windfall of several million if Newcastle United or one of their Premier League rivals go ahead with signing former Hoops star Moussa Dembele this summer, according to the Scottish Sun.

According to Bleacher Report, sources linked to the prospective new Magpies owners have deemed the Lyon forward a “possible option” in the upcoming transfer window.

Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with Dembele, the Daily Star claiming the Old Trafford club is lining up a £60million deal for the 23-year-old.

Dembele thoroughly impressed at Celtic, with 51 goals and 18 assists from 94 games, while at Fulham, the club where he came through the ranks, he claimed 19 goals and nine assists as a teenager.

The Frenchman has taken that form to Lyon, where his current tally stands at 42 goals and 13 assists from 88 appearances since they paid Celtic a reported £20million for his services.

According to the Scottish Sun, Celtic inserted a sell-on clause when Dembele left, and they stand to make £4million from a £60million sale.

If the reports are true, it would show great foresight by the Celtic hierarchy in successfully inserting a sell-on clause in the terms of Dembele’s move to Lyon.

Particularly in these financially tricky times for the football industry, £4million would be a significant cash boost for the Hoops in terms of running costs, strengthening the team and so on.

Hopefully for Celtic there will be a bidding war which raises the reported £60million fee up further and in turn earn the Bhoys even more money – which in turn could help keep the Glasgow neighbours at bay for another season.
