Report: England insiders now share whether Ben White will be in Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad today

Arsenal defender Ben White is expected to be named in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup this afternoon.

The Evening Standard report that England insiders say White is set to be included after the injury which has ruled Reece James out of the tournament.

White has played at right-back for Arsenal this season but of course can also play at centre-half and that kind of versatility is important at an international competition.

He was a late inclusion in the Euro 2020 squad when Trent Alexander-Arnold was ruled out, not least because he can play in those two roles and, in an emergency, as a holding midfielder.

White set to be named in England World Cup squad

White was not included in the most recent Three Lions squad, which was the final opportunity for players to impress Gareth Southgate up close before the tournament starts.

But his performances for Arsenal seem to have done the trick as the Gunners have soared to the top of the Premier League.

Kyle Walker is facing a race to get fully fit, and White is perfectly capable of operating in both of the roles the Manchester City man usually takes up.

White did not get on the pitch at Euro 2020, with Tyrone Mings preferred when Harry Maguire was ruled out of the tournament’s first two matches through injury.

He should have greater status in the squad if he gets there this time around, although England’s fitness situation when they get out there will make that clearer.

It is hard to argue against White’s inclusion, given he has had a far better season than the likes of the aforementioned Maguire.
