Report: Emi Martinez will look to leave Arsenal if Arteta opts with Bernd Leno
Arsenal star, Emi Martinez, will reportedly make a decision on his future and could leave the club if Mikel Arteta doesn’t select him in the opening weeks of the season.
According to Goal, the Gunners stopper will look to move away from The Emirates if Arteta opts to go with Bernd Leno ahead of him.
Martinez was a key figure for Arteta and Arsenal post-lockdown. With Leno out injured, the former Reading loanee stepped up to the plate and helped the Gunners win the FA Cup with some fine performances.
However, his future remains unclear, given Leno was firmly cemented as the number one prior to his injury.
A number of clubs are said to be interested in Martinez, too. The likes of Aston Villa and Leeds have been credited with an interest in the past few weeks, with The Independent claiming Villa were lining up a £10m bid.
It will, then, be interesting to see which way Mikel Arteta goes with this one as Martinez now apparently fancies himself as being ready to be the number one at the club.
A tough call for Arteta but Martinez does deserve his chance – TBR View
Bernd Leno is a very good goalkeeper who cost a lot of money but he couldn’t really have any grumbles if Arteta does go with Martinez.
Just like other positions on the pitch, the goalkeeping position is up for grabs and can be seized based on a good run of form. Martinez has done just that and at the moment, the jersey is his.
It would be a big kick in the teeth for the stopper if Arteta goes straight back to Leno. However, these are the big calls a manager must make and the Gunners boss now faces a major decision.
