According to CalcioMercatoWeb, Arsenal technical director Edu Gaspar could use Lucas Torreira in a player-plus-cash bid to sign Arthur Melo from Juventus.

The Gunners should be really pleased with the business they’ve done in this transfer window so far. Marquinhos, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Gabriel Jesus have all come in, while Oleksandr Zinchenko is just a few formalities away from signing for the club as well.

That’s two new midfielders at the Emirates already, but it looks like Edu and Mikel Arteta are still keen to bring in another player to strengthen the middle of their park.

Juventus midfielder Arthur has been a target since January, and he’s said to be on the shortlist in this window as well.

Torreira spent last season on loan in Italy at Fiorentina. He was really impressive throughout, and everybody expected La Viola to make his move permanent.

However, Fiorentina decided against it in the end and Torreira returned to Arsenal. He was even picked by Arteta for the club’s pre-season tour to the United States, but it is clear that his future lies elsewhere.

Juventus have been linked with a move for Torreira in recent weeks, and CMW now claim that Arsenal could use the Old Lady’s interest in the Uruguayan to pull off a deal of their own.

Arsenal could reportedly offer Torreira plus cash to sign Arthur, who joined Juve for an eye-watering £66 million in the summer of 2020 (The Guardian).

Lucas Torreira, branded as ‘incredible’ by Bernd Leno, has made it clear that he has no interest in staying at Arsenal beyond the end of this summer’s transfer window.

In an interview about three weeks ago, the Uruguayan was asked if there was a chance that he would stay at the Emirates for the upcoming campaign. He said: “From the beginning, they told me that I had no place, so my desire is not to stay either.”

If Arsenal really are interested in Arthur and Juventus want Torreira as well, this deal makes a lot of sense.

The Brazilian is a fine player, and he would fit in really well at Arsenal. If Edu can pull off a Torreira-plus-cash deal to bring Arthur in, it could prove to be one of his best deals as the Gunners’ technical director.
