Report: Eddie Howe already looking to replace 'really good' Newcastle United player for next season

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe reportedly already wants to replace striker Chris Wood for next season.

The Athletic report that Howe is expected to replace 30-year-old Wood with a younger forward next year.

Wood arrived from last season’s relegation rivals Burnley for £25m in the January transfer window.

The New Zealand international was brought in to provide competition and injury cover to Callum Wilson.

However, he struggled to make an impact at St. James’ Park, scoring just three goals in 25 appearances in all competitions.

Wood has now fallen further down the pecking order after the arrival of club record signing Alexander Isak.

Newcastle have already brought in one young forward who could potentially replace Wood.

Wonderkid Garang Kuol’s arrival at Newcastle was confirmed this week, with the 18-year-old joining up with the squad after the World Cup.

Howe wants to replace Wood next season

It’s been a frustrating season for the towering centre-forward.

Several clubs made a late move in the summer to sign Wood, according to journalist Craig Hope, but Howe wanted to keep hold of him.

Gary Neville labelled Wood as a ‘really good’ signing for the Magpies when he first arrived.

Wood admitted he was shocked that Newcastle were interested in him after reading about the other names linked with a move.

The 30-year-old forward has been unlucky in his time on Tyneside, and his effort certainly can’t be faulted.

Wilson and Isak’s injury woes have handed Wood some opportunities this season.

Before Saturday’s win against Fulham, Wood had featured in every game this season under Howe.

However, four of those appearances were less than five minutes long, and he’s only made two starts.

He scored in the Carabao Cup against Tranmere Rovers, but has yet to open his account in the league.

Wood will be hoping his future is resolved quickly if Howe decides to replace him next year.
