Report: Diakhaby rejected Newcastle as he expected a better club
Mouctar Diakhaby turned down a transfer deadline day move to Newcastle United, according to Marca.
The Spanish publication is claiming the French defender believes he deserved ‘something better’.
A move to the Premier League was thought to be the ace’s preference, however, he expected to receive an offer from a ‘top club’.
Steve Bruce’s side made a declaration of intent as opposed to an official offer, according to Marca. But it was still rejected by Diakhaby.
That left the Magpies reeling, with Joe Willock their only incoming transfer of the summer window.
Diakhaby was not the only player to turn down the Magpies. The club moved for the likes of Hamza Choudhury and Boubacar Kamara on deadline day.
A move for the Leicester City ace broke down for the second time in six months, while the Marseille ace turned the club down.
Diakhaby having rejected Newcastle is damning indictment
Getting rejected by a player is never a pretty sight. It leaves a club wondering whether they are headed down the right track.
At least, that is the feeling you get when you look at Newcastle.
Getting rejected by Diakhaby is a damning indictment of the Magpies’ standing. The club’s fall from grace has been quite spectacular over the last decade or so.
Back in 2011, Newcastle were signing the likes of highly-rated Yohan Cabaye from Lille. However, fast forward 10 years and they are getting rejected by average defenders.
You are left wondering what next for a club that desperately needed some reinforcements this summer.
The squad lacks any sort of strength, especially in defence, where Federico Fernandez made the most Premier League starts last season with just 24.
But, when players are actively turning you down, you have to ask, is there much the club can do in trying to improve the quality of the squad?
