Tottenham Hotspur face a battle in their pursuit of Maxi Gomez this summer. As reported by The Mirror, Spurs remain interested in a move for the Celta Vigo striker. The Uruguayan’s representatives, according to the Daily Star, have already spoken to Tottenham about a potential deal. As reported by The Guardian, he has a £43.5 million release clause in his deal which could make him an attractive proposition for Spurs.
However, Valencia are also keen. As reported by AS in Spain, Los Che are keen to bring Gomez to the Mestalla this summer as the club prepares for another Champions League campaign.
The report also highlights just where Valencia may have the upper hand.
The two clubs have a good working relationship already. Plenty of transfers have gone back and forward between the two sides in recent years. The likes of Fabian Orellana, Facundo Roncaglia, Daniel Wass and Santi Mina for example.
Indeed, Mina is even being mentioned in the same report as potentially heading back to Celta this summer. Marca has even claimed he could be used as a makeweight in any Gomez transfer, although AS disputes this.
Either way, Valencia and Celta’s excellent working relationship provides Tottenham with a major stumbling block in their hunt for the 13-goal frontman.
