The Chronicle claims Sven Botman’s agent Muy Mareno has been asked Newcastle “what if” questions, in regards to potential relegation come May. The Dutch defender is being heavily linked with a move to Tyneside.
Botman, 21, has been sensational for Lille in the 18 months he has spent in France. Joining from Ajax in the summer of 2020, Botman helped Lille beat PSG to the Ligue 1 title last season. He has played 68 times for Lille since.
The Netherlands defender, though, is said to be keen on a move to Newcastle. That is what The Mail report on Thursday, stating that Newcastle ‘intensified’ talks with Lille on Wednesday and Botman is ready to take the leap.
But the Chronicle says Botman’s agent has been asking what if the club do actually suffer relegation to the Championship. What happens then, to his client? Will he be forced to stay in England’s second tier with Newcastle?

Botman agent: Crucial clause that will make Newcastle deal possible
Eddie Howe has got Newcastle playing with confidence again, and it was more than evident against a lacklustre Manchester United side earlier this week. The Toon will be kicking themselves, they should have won the match.
But the Toon are in real danger and have played numerous more games than their rivals. So, what would tempt a player to join Newcastle – other than the financial aspect? A relegation release clause.
Newcastle must accept that players will be wary about a relegation. If they are to attract big names such as Botman, then the only way to convince them long-term will be the inclusion of a cheap-ish relegation release clause.
