It appears the clock is ticking down on the Tottenham Hotspur career of Gedson Fernandes. Just one year after he joined the club on an 18-month loan deal Spurs are set to cancel the deal and send the Portuguese midfielder back to Benfica.
As reported by Football.London, Tottenham paid £3.8 million for the initial loan fee with The Times suggesting a potential buying option of £40 million if Fernandes impressed. After just a handful of fairly disjointed displays, it is no surprise that Tottenham are not going to activate that. In fact, they likely regret paying the initial £3.8 million.
But what next for Fernandes?
Despite his struggles at Tottenham the midfielder has been touted as a top talent for a number of years and has plenty of interest from other clubs.

AC Milan are considered to be one of those suitors. But reports in Italy would suggest that after his disappointing stint at Tottenham, Fernandes is unlikely to be making a move elsewhere anytime soon.
CalcioMercatoWeb understands that Milan have been told that Benfica plan to keep Fernandes at Benfica for the rest of the season.
Jorge Jesus is a fan of the player and wants to give him a chance to shine at the Estadio Da Luz.
The belief is Fernandes needs stability at this time and that a spell with his boyhood club could bring the best out of him once again.
So whilst Tottenham are letting Fernandes go, Benfica will not be doing the same thing this January.
