The Athletic have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur and Daniel Levy have chosen to sack Jose Mourinho for two specific reasons on Monday morning – with the Portuguese boss struggling to deliver Tottenham back into the top four of the Premier League.
Mourinho has struggled as Spurs boss this season. Not only have Spurs failed to break into the top four after a good start to the season, but they have also been knocked out of the Europa League at an early stage. They have reached the Carabao Cup final.
But just hours after his sacking, The Athletic have underlined two reasons why he has been given the chop. One is that the Spurs board were disappointed with his constant criticism of the players and refusal to take blame when they suffered a loss.
The other reason is the growing belief that when fans did return to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, that there would be widespread criticism of Mourinho – not only due to results, but because of the system and philosophy of team under Mourinho.

TBR’s view – Tottenham right to sack Mourinho
But the timing is all wrong. With the Carabap Cup just days away, a win would have at least secured Tottenham some European football next season – though in the form of the Europa League. It will have also seen Spurs end their search for silverware.
It could have hinged on one result. Had Spurs won against City under Mourinho, then it might have been seen as a decent campaign – and even tempted Harry Kane to stay. Carabao Cup success is still a possibility, but is it now less likely? Perhaps.
There have been claims that the inclusion in the European Super League has been a reason for Mourinho’s exit – but those claims have since been denied by numerous, more reputable outlets.
