A report from Football.London has suggested Tottenham Hotspur will be looking into signing players who are entering the final 12 months of their current contracts this summer.

The report claims that Tottenham are looking at such players as they are likely to be available at a reduced cost, with their current clubs unwilling to risk losing them for nothing in 12 months time.

Two examples are cited in the form of Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik, both of whom have been regularly linked with Spurs over the past few months.

It is a decent strategy for Tottenham in a summer where transfer fees need to be as low as possible. Spurs have accrued big losses, along with the rest of the footballing world, amid the global health crisis.

It is also suggested that Tottenham will target potential free agents this summer. The report references West Brom defender Nathan Ferguson but the likes of Ryan Fraser and Willian have also been linked.

Looking at players in the final year of their contract is wise from Tottenham and opens up a pool of potential targets.

The likes of Lyon’s Memphis Depay, Bayern Munich’s David Alaba, and Marseille’s Maxime Lopez are in similar positions and would all undoubtedly be welcomed at Tottenham.

So it will be interesting to see just who Tottenham target next if this is the current strategy.
