The Mail has shared what Lille defender Sven Botman thinks about a potential January move to Newcastle. Dutch defender Botman has been linked with Newcastle, as the owners look to improve the Toon’s defence.
Sunday’s 4-0 drubbing by Leicester is proof that action must be taken. Reports state that Newcastle are closing in on a move to sign England and Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier in the January window.
They will not only be done there, though. It is also believed that Newcastle want to take advantage of Lille’s financial issues – by raiding the French champions for uncapped Netherlands ace Botman.
The Athletic reported earlier this month that Lille would accept offers of around £40million for Botman, with Steve Nickson identifying the Lille ace as an option. Now, the Mail report Botman’s stance.
Unfortunately for Newcastle, but perhaps unsurprisingly, Botman has reservations about joining Newcastle with the club sitting in 19th. Indeed, there are other clubs interested that are not flirting with relegation.

Botman stance on Newcastle: Signings and wages could tempt Dutchman
Yes, Newcastle are in a perilous position. The Toon could make a couple of big signings early on in January, Trippier being one and perhaps Jesse Lingard. Surely that would tempt Botman.
It would tell the Dutch defender, and others, they are building a squad capable of avoiding the drop. That if they are on board, then relegation will not be such a concern.
Of course, Botman could also change his mind if Newcastle offer big wages – and a relegation release clause. A pre-determined fee that would allow him to go if Newcastle do get relegated.
