According to a report from The Athletic today, Arsenal players were left feeling ‘leggy’ by some of Unai Emery’s training methods.

Emery lasted around a year in charge of the Gunners after taking over from Arsene Wenger. He was swiftly moved on, with player fallouts and a lack of results on the pitch all to blame for his demise.

Since then, Mikel Arteta has come in. The Spaniard won the FA Cup and Community Shield and is now one game away from a Europa League final, potentially, against Manchester United.

And The Athletic have claimed in their report today that Emery’s methods had left the Gunners players feeling tired and leggy. It is stated that in terms of match preparation that ‘if Emery had five days free, he would use them’ in the run up to games. In comparison, Arteta is said to condense things into a 48 hour period.

Emery, it is claimed, was very much of the opinion that ‘we can do more’. Arteta, meanwhile, is the opposite, believing that less is more when it comes to preparation for big games.

Under Unai Emery, it was clear the players were struggling to implement his style. It was also clear that some players weren’t happy playing under the Villarreal coach.

Minor changes like this detailed here can be key for clubs and their players. It doesn’t take much for the boat to start rocking and that is what seems to have happened under Emery.

It’s clear that Arteta is a good people person. That will stand him in good stead, as long as he keeps getting the time from above to get things right.
