The Daily Express has claimed Tottenham Hotspur are in talks to sign Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier on a free transfer this summer – and the report details how crucial Toby Alderweireld is to the signing.

Meunier, 28, is set to leave PSG this summer after 128 appearances in all competitions since joining the Ligue 1 champions in the summer of 2016. A 40-time Belgium international, his signature will be in demand this summer.

Jose Mourinho is already said to have spoken to the right-back, in an attempt to convince the defender that a move to north London is the right choice. But Spurs have an ace up their sleeve in looking to tempt Meunier.

Indeed, the club are hoping that Meunier will be convinced to join Spurs this summer due to the presence of close friend Alderweireld at the north London side. The Belgian teammates are close, and Spurs hope to take advantage.

TBR’s view – Meunier would be the ideal Tottenham signing

Ask most Tottenham fans what the club needs this summer, and the majority would say they need a striker, a replacement for Jan Vertonghen, a goalkeeper and a right-back to replace the unreliable Serge Aurier.

Spurs are unlikely to have much money to spend given the current financial restraints of the global health crisis. So, bringing in free signings or even bargain deals is crucial – and Meunier would be perfect at right-back.

During his 128 outings for PSG, Meunier has scored 13 and created another 21 – but is just as defensively solid. One of the best free agents on the market, Spurs must do everything to tempt him with a move to north London.
