Liverpool’s centre-back crisis is now no secret, with Virgil van Dijk recently joined on the sidelines by Joe Gomez with serious knee injuries.
It leaves Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp relying on Joel Matip staying fit, Fabinho to survive as an auxiliary defender and unproven quantities Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips.
So perhaps the club need to bring in a top-quality defender after all, with one of Sadio Mane’s oldest friends a clear candidate.
Liverpool have previously been linked with a move for Kalidou Koulibaly with no end result. As reported by The Mirror, Jurgen Klopp rates the Senegalese star and the Napoli man is on Liverpool’s radar for a potential move.
The report also details Mane’s ‘close bond’ with the 29-year-old.
Mane would certainly welcome his old pal’s arrival.
The pair are good friends, having represented Senegal together for many years and Mane once gave the thumbs down to a fan banner suggesting Koulibaly could join Liverpool’s arch-rivals Manchester United.
On top of that, the pair are actually former club-mates. Mane and Koulibaly were both at FC Metz in 2012, with the young defender even captaining the side as they suffered relegation to French football’s third-tier.
Both players left Metz that summer and have gone on to become two of the best in the world at their craft.
Liverpool might be wise to bring the duo together again when they can start pushing for silverware and not fighting relegation.
