The Daily Record have claimed that Rennes defender Mexer could be in attendance at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon as the Gers take on Old Firm rivals Celtic in their penultimate match of the season.

French newspaper L’Equipe claimed last week that the 30-year-old defender met with Steven Gerrard in France, as the Gers boss went on a whistle-stop tour in order to land the powerhouse centre-back.

Mexer is one of the first names on the team sheet at Rennes, and scored in the Coupe De La Ligue final against PSG as Rennes produced a shock penalty-shootout win. He is out of contract at the end of the season.

Gerrard met with him in a Rennes restaurant in a bid to thrash out a move, and it is said that Mexer is weighing up a move to Ibrox. Now, he could take a sample of the Old Firm rivalry on Sunday afternoon at Ibrox.

The latest report claims Mexer could attend Ibrox this weekend, and his agent Laurent Schmitt – who is currently in London on business – could join the 44-time Mozambique international in the stands.

Mexer is unavailable to play for Rennes this weekend as he is serving a one-match ban through suspension. Bordeaux and Nantes are also said to be interested in the former Nacional defender.

TBR’s view

If Mexer does attend Rangers on Sunday, then a move to Ibrox is almost confirmed. Gerrard’s willingness to meet him in France shows just how much the Liverpool legend wants to sign him.

But the Rangers gaffer’s efforts will have surely tempted Mexer into moving to Glasgow. Indeed, Mexer would be an amazing signing and it is clear Gerrard knows that. If he attends on Sunday, surely he will sign on at Rangers.
