Report: David Moyes wants to make Olivier Giroud his first West Ham signing, in second spell

David Moyes has returned to West Ham United for a second time after replacing his replacement in Manuel Pellegrini over the weekend – and he has reportedly targeted Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud as the first signing of his second spell.

Moyes spent the majority of the 2017-18 season in charge of West Ham after Slaven Bilic’s sacking, and guided the east Londoners to a comfortable 13th place – after taking over when the club were in the bottom three.

Despite that, he was replaced by Pellegrini. Now, Moyes has taken control for a second time and The Sun claim Giroud is a target. The 97-time France international has managed just five Premier League appearances this season.

Indeed, Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi have been preferred up front. Giroud is likely to leave Stamford Bridge in January, with The Sun previously claiming that the 33-year-old would cost just £3million.

TBR’s view – Sebastian Haller needs a kick up the backside

A £45million signing from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer, Haller has struggled in the Premier League. Yes, all players need time to adjust to the physical, fast-paced Premier League. But West Ham also need a goalscorer.

If The Hammers are to get themselves out of trouble, it is key that they bring in a player who can net above eight goals between now and the end of the season. Giroud is more than capable of doing that, having scored 78 in 225 Premier League games.

Signing Giroud would provide Moyes with a striker who can save West Ham this season, but also give Haller the competition required to get the best out of the Frenchman.
