A report from The Telegraph is suggesting how David Luiz managed to secure a new contract at The Emirates.
There was much surprise last week when it was announced that Arsenal had signed the Brazilian to a new deal at the club. Luiz is a massive earner and his erratic and inconsistent displays on the pitch have seen him lose some trust among the Arsenal fanbase.
However, the report claims that the veteran defender agreed a ‘significant’ paycut to ensure he remained at Arsenal.
Luiz is happy at the club and, whilst he had a howler on his return to action after the global health crisis, has become a dressing room leader at Arsenal and exhibited some decent form this season.
Previous reports have suggested that Luiz was on a reported £125,000-a-week at Arsenal. It made him the club’s fifth highest earner.
However, that has now been reduced, helping Arsenal in their decision to give Luiz another season at the club.
The amount he is now earning is not reported but Arsenal players had already agreed a 12.5 percent pay cut because of the global health crisis, so it is likely to be more than that sum.
For some Arsenal fans, it will not be enough. Many had decided to wash their hands of the Brazilian after his dismal Manchester City display. However, Arsenal’s hierarchy will no doubt be hoping his experience will be worth keeping around for at least one more year.
