Report: Daniel Barlaser agrees Newcastle extension

The Daily Mail have claimed that Newcastle United have agreed to extend midfielder Daniel Barlaser’s contract after impressing on loan at League One side Rotherham United this season.

Barlaser, 23, is in with a shout of receiving the League One Player of the Season award after helping Rotherham rise to second in the table and in with an excellent shout of promotion – prior to the global health crisis.

The midfielder has had a hand in seven goals during his 35 games for Rotherham. The report states that Newcastle activated an extension to keep him on Tyneside until the summer of 2021 in March, though it was not announced.

Glowing reports from loan manager Shola Ameobi led to that decision and Steve Bruce is now keen to give the England youth cap to shine in the senior side next season. A loan to a Championship side is also a possibility.

TBR’s view – Barlaser deserves chance at Newcastle

Having been a loyal servant and done all of what Newcastle have asked him to – loans to Rotherham, Accrington Stanley twice and Crewe Alexandra, as well as being a regular for the Under-23 side – he deserves a go.

Able to play as a box-to-box midfielder, sitting in front of the defence or even playing as a no.10, Barlaser is more versatile than Sean and Matty Longstaff – and has more experience at senior level, albeit lower down the pyramid.

He deserves a chance and an impressive pre-season could see him become a crucial member of the side next term.
