Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth is personally leading the club’s attempts to sign Anthony Gordon.

The Athletic claim that Ashworth is having an impact on the Magpies’ summer business in his first transfer window at the club.

Ashworth is apparently dealing with Leicester City in Newcastle’s attempts to prise James Maddison away from the King Power Stadium.

And he is also speaking to Everton about trying to get their academy graduate wideman out of Goodison Park this summer.

Newcastle have been looking for a new wide forward throughout the transfer window but have not yet boosted their firepower.

You get the impression that they would ideally want a wideman and a new central striker too but also do not want to overspend in their first summer since the takeover.

The Athletic report also says that agents are starting to get the message that Newcastle will not be an easy target and are going to structure their deals sensibly.

The Sun have claimed that although Everton do not want to sell the 21-year-old winger and could offer him a ‘a new lucrative deal’, but Newcastle could pay £40 million to get him.

Gordon was described as “really special” by former West Ham United striker Dean Ashton on talkSPORT last month.

He said: “I think he could be special. Really special. Personally, I think Anthony Gordon would be a superb signing for Newcastle.

“Whenever I have seen him, his delivery from wide areas. His workrate. I think he could be a special player.
