The Independent have claimed that Crystal Palace want to sign Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta after a wonderful start to the 2020-21 campaign – though they may face competition from Leeds United for the Frenchman.
Mateta, 23, has scored 10 goals in 17 appearances for Mainz this season – though six of those goals have come in the form of two hat-tricks. Boasting enormous speed, Mateta has starred up front or out wide for Mainz.
However, on Saturday, he was left on the bench for the first time this season as Mainz held on for a draw against Borussia Dortmund. It might be a hint that he is set to leave Mainz, with Palace the latest side to be linked.
Indeed, the Independent claim Palace are considering a move but Mainz will only consider a ‘sizeable fee’ to let him go. French side Le Phoceen said last week that Leeds and Bundesliga clubs are tracking the £13.5million-rated ace.
TBR’s view – Which club needs Mateta more?
Palace have an abundance of options up top. Christian Benteke has rediscovered his goalscoring touch somewhat this season, thriving under Palace’s move attacking style under the guidance of Roy Hodgson.
Michy Batshuayi is on loan from Chelsea, Wilf Zaha can play up top and Jordan Ayew is also a crucial member of the side. But Leeds, meanwhile, only have Patrick Bamford up top – with Rodrigo playing in midfield.
Tyler Roberts has been linked with a loan exit and if the Wales international departs, then a striker could be needed. Leeds, then, might have more of a chance to get the Frenchman.
