Crystal Palace are hoping that they will see off competition from Celtic for the signature of Hearts left-back Aaron Hickey, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (19/1; page 63).
Hickey has established himself as one of the most exciting talents in the Scottish Premiership. He made his debut for Hearts at 16 and has made 25 appearances in all competitions this season.
Unsurprisingly, there is plenty of interest in the defender.
The Sun on Sunday (19/1; page 63) reports that Palace and Celtic are battling for his signature, with Hearts holding out for £1.5 million for the 17-year-old.
Interestingly, the report notes that the Eagles are in the driving seat for a deal. They are reportedly willing to outbid Celtic and are prepared to loan Hickey back to Hearts for the rest of the season.
The Sun on Sunday reports that the Hoops are reluctant to meet the asking price for the youngster, who was released by the Bhoys before his move to Hearts.
TBR View – Celtic could rue missing out
Admittedly, Neil Lennon has a number of options at left-back. And it may be some time before Hickey realises his full potential.
But Celtic are arguably taking a risk should they decide to not meet Hearts’ asking price. It is not a huge outlay for the Hoops and he appears to have the potential to be worth a lot more in the future.
There is always an element of risk attached to spending significant sums on teenage prospects. But some of Hickey’s early performances suggest that he would be worth the risk.
