Report: Crystal Palace battling three clubs for 31-year-old free agent
Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb have claimed that Crystal Palace are interested in signing free agent Ezequiel Schelotto following his release from Brighton – but face competition from four other European clubs including Watford.
Schelotto, 31, joined Brighton from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2017 – but after three years on the books with the Seagulls, the one-time Italy international only played 32 times in all competitions for the Premier League club.
It saw Brighton decide to cancel his £32,000-a-week (Spotrac) contract earlier on in the window. Now, five clubs want to sign the Argentina-born defender – in Palace, Watford, Besiktas and Genoa. Second-tier Italian side SPAL are also keen.
Palace could be after competition for Joel Ward on the right side of their defence, despite the addition of Nathan Ferguson. Schelotto can also be used as a right wing-back or even as a midfielder if required to do so.
TBR’s view – Do Palace really need Schelotto?
For Schelotto to struggle in the way he did at Brighton is proof that Palace need to avoid a move. Now 31 years of age, he is experienced but he has past his peak – which was supposed to have come during his Brighton spell.
Palace are best avoiding him, and targeting someone in the Championship – or waiting until January.
