Report: Conte now wants to bring £25.5m Brazilian to Tottenham; Mourinho loves him

Tottenham Hotspur don’t seem to have wasted any time in looking for Alessandro Bastoni alternatives.

Spurs were dealt a huge blow this week when the player’s agent confirmed he’d be staying at Inter Milan.

Tottenham are apparently trying to sign Villarreal’s Pau Torres, but another name has now emerged as a potential target.

On Thursday, Calciomercato reported that Roma defender Roger Ibanez has been a long-term target for Antonio Conte.

As well at Tottenham, Newcastle United are apparently in pursuit too.

Indeed, the Magpies have reportedly ‘demonstrated a first, concrete interest’ in the Brazil Under-23 international.

Ibanez has enjoyed a superb season under Jose Mourinho at Roma, winning the inaugural Europa Conference League.

The 23-year-old made 51 appearances in all competitions for the Giallorossi last term, including 34 in Serie A.

Calciomercato claims that, while Ibanez isn’t ‘unsellable’, Roma want at least 30m euros (around £25.5million) for him.

The 6ft 1in centre-back has been in Italian football since 2019, so Conte and Fabio Paratici will no doubt know him well.

“I want to show what I can do on the pitch”

Ibanez would certainly be a great shout for Spurs – a young, incredibly talented defender with plenty of top-level experience.

When he joined Roma in 2020, he spoke of his strengths and also showed the right kind of attitude in challenging for a first-team place.

“I studied up on the history of the club before signing and there are so many champions of the past,” said Ibanez, via Football Italia.

“I know there is a lot of competition for places, but I can make some space for myself, both from now until June and into next season.

“I’m quick and strong in the air too, I like to play the ball to feet. All these are words, of course, I want to show what I can do on the pitch.”
