The Telegraph have claimed that clubs from Saudi Arabia and Qatar were both interested in tempting Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil into leaving the Gunners in the summer window – but the playmaker has stayed put.

Ozil, 31, remains at Arsenal and is contracted with the club until the end of the 2020-21 campaign. He continues to remain Arsenal’s highest-paid player on a whopping £350,000 a week – but looks as though he has played his last game for Arsenal.

The 92-time Germany international has repeatedly reiterated he is happy to remain at Arsenal until the end of his contract – and remains a favourite among supporters. Fans applauded his decision this week to pay the wages of axed mascot Gunnersauras.

The latest report states that Ozil was a target for clubs from Saudi Arabia and Qatar but has since remained with the Gunners beyond the deadline. He is set to be axed from Arsenal’s 25-man Europa League squad.

Indeed, it appears that Arsenal may have to accept that Ozil is going to rinse the club’s coffers for every last penny until the moment his contract expires. Until June 30, Ozil will continue to cost Arsenal £350,000 every week.

Does he stand any chance of breaking back into the side? Mikel Arteta likes his side to be high intensity, pressing constantly and with lots of energy. While Ozil boasts massive creativity, work rate and tempo are certainly not two of his traits.
