Report: Club willing to pay towards £250k-a-week Spurs target’s wages to facilitate move

Reported Tottenham Hotspur target Philippe Coutinho could see part of his salary covered by Barcelona in order to facilitate a move away, according to The Telegraph.

France Football recently claimed that Spurs are still keen on the Brazil ace, though interest has cooled somewhat due to the big numbers involved.

However, Spanish outlet Sport reckons a part-exchange bid of 50m to 60m Euro (£45m to £54m) plus a 30m Euro player (£27m) would suffice for Barca.

Defensive reinforcements are reportedly being sought, particularly at centre-back and left-back, and Tottenham have Danny Rose on their books who could potentially be included in the deal.

Now, The Telegraph claim that Barca are ready to pay for a portion of Coutinho’s wages for him to move back to England or stay at Bayern Munich.

The Camp Nou side reportedly accepts that the 28-year-old’s wages, a reported £250,000-a-week (ESPN), will be difficult for many clubs to cover in wake of current events, so they’re mulling over a compromise to cover his salary.

TBR View:

Coutinho is a player of the highest calibre who simply doesn’t appear to be the right fit for Barcelona and could soon be moved on, but he has proven quality at the highest level, including in the Premier League with Liverpool.

Tottenham’s purse strings are likely to be tightened in wake of the disruption caused by the global health crisis, and so a straightforward purchase – reportedly for £72million, according to Mundo Deportivo – is very much out of the question.

However, with the reported possibility of Coutinho’s wages being partly covered by Barca, as well as Rose potentially being utilised as a makeweight, it doesn’t seem quite so implausible – but of course, there is likely to be a lot of competition for his services.
