Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Vasco da Gama prodigy Marrony this summer after head of recruitment Steve Nickson travelled to Brazil to thrash out a deal – and they could get him on the cheap.

Brazilian outlet Globo Esporto claim Nickson travelled to South America for talks with Marrony’s club over a move for the 20-year-old. The Vasco da Gama starlet is believed to have a £31.5million release clause in his contract.

Sporting Lisbon are also keen on Marrony, after he broke into Vasco’s senior side and has since clocked up 22 senior appearances, with the majority coming from out wide though he can play up front too.

Now, Portuguese outlet Record claim Vasco want a figure much smaller than Marrony’s release clause. They claim the Brazilian outfit want £10.7million for the young attacker, though Sporting may not even afford that.

It comes as a double boost for Newcastle, then, with their only competitors unable to afford Marrony – who is now available at a much cheaper price than first thought.

TBR’s view – Marrony could be an exciting talent for Newcastle

Still very raw, Marrony has only found the back of the net on one occasion for his current side. But with the Brazilian league a very decent standard, he has impressed when given the chance.

Adding an end product to his game will come with time. At more than £30million, Newcastle would be taking an enormous risk. It would be a reckless decision and one that owner Mike Ashley would be foolish to make.

But at little over £10million, Marrony is a risk worth taking and could prosper to become another household Brazilian name in the Premier League in years to come.
