Reported Newcastle United target Arturo Vidal is in line to be offloaded by Barcelona, who would “dearly” love to get him off their wage bill, according to Goal.com.
Italian website ITA Sport Press claimed last month that the Chile international midfielder is a target for Newcastle’s prospective new owners.
Chronicle Live have reported that the Premier League’s owner’s and director’s test is at the final stages and any takeover announcement will be left to the would-be owners and Mike Ashley.
With the prospect of Newcastle having a huge transfer budget should the deal be done, a host of high-profile players and coaches have been linked with St James’ Park.
Although Vidal recently spoke of his intention to stay at Barca, the club is believed to be in financial difficulties and could look to part with numerous players this summer.
The Goal.com report, entitled ‘Camp Nou clearout’, said of the Chilean: “Barca would dearly love to have Vidal and Rakitic off their books, though, given the pair are the wrong side of 30 and on contracts worth €9m (£8m/$9.8m) and €6m (£5.4m/$6.5m) per annum, respectively.”
An experienced, tenacious midfielder with over 500 club appearances, 115 Chile caps, a glittering trophy cabinet and the Lionel Messi seal of approval, he would be just the kind of marquee signing that would create a buzz at Newcastle, and is also a fairly realistic signing too.
“Arturo gives you so much,” Messi told Metro after Barca’s 1-0 Champions League win over Inter last October. “He is a player who, when he enters, catches, recovers, arrives, plays.
“He is a very important player for us and it is good that he had these minutes today, he felt important because he is a very important player for the team.”
Although Vidal seemingly doesn’t want to leave, it really doesn’t seem as though he’ll have much choice.
