Report: Club stunned over fee Tottenham paid for Paratici signing
Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of Emerson Royal silencing his doubters and living up to expectations have seemingly been dealt a blow, with The Telegraph reporting that Barcelona cannot believe that Spurs paid £25.8 million for the right-back in the summer.
It was imperative that Tottenham signed a new right-back in the summer. Matt Doherty had proved to be an underwhelming addition the previous year. And Serge Aurier had managed to establish himself as first-choice again despite frequently coming in for criticism during his time in North London.
They were linked with a host of names. In fact, it was claimed at one stage that personal terms with Takehiro Tomiyasu had been agreed. Obviously, no move would ultimately take place.
Instead, the player Spurs brought in on deadline day was Royal. The move rounded off a bizarre summer for the 22-year-old. He had been co-owned by Real Betis and Barcelona before the latter made his move permanent earlier on in the window.
Royal went on to make a handful of appearances for Barca. However, Tottenham managed to tempt them into a sale.
But, as it turns out, the Catalan giants were only too happy to cash in when Spurs came to the table. The Telegraph is reporting that some at Barcelona cannot believe what Tottenham paid for the defender.
Emerson Royal still has time and potential to turn Tottenham career around
Royal has not had the best time in the Premier League. He has come in for criticism for not contributing more going forward. And The Telegraph reports that Tottenham want another right wing-back this month.
But it is too soon to write Royal off. It is easy to forget that he is still only 22 years of age. Lucas Moura tipped him for a ‘great future‘.
He also contributed 10 assists in 79 appearances for Betis. That is not a terrible return for a player who apparently cannot make an impact in the final third.
Only two players won more tackles in La Liga last season, according to FB Ref. And he topped the league table for interceptions.
He does need to improve. And it is ominous that Barca were only too happy to receive £25.8 million. But he can still turn his Tottenham career around.
