Report: Club slash price of £50m striker who Spurs wanted in December and Mourinho vowed to sign

Back in December, it was reported by The Mirror that Tottenham Hotspur were keeping tabs on the progress of Lyon attacker Memphis Depay. The report claimed that the Dutchman had overtaken team-mate Moussa Dembele as the object of Tottenham’s affections at the French side.

It was suggested that Tottenham were ‘ready to make a £50 million move’ for the former Manchester United star.

Now, it seems that Tottenham could actually get a hold of Depay for much less. ESPN reported this week that Lyon are ready to slash their asking price to £30 million for the Dutch attacker. It comes amid the current global health crisis, Depay’s contract expiring in 2021 and an injury-struck campaign for the 26-year-old.

Despite those injuries, the attacker had scored 14 goals in 18 games this season and is currently on the road to recovery.

At just £30 million, Depay could be a wonderful signing for Tottenham. He could play wide but also provide adequate cover for Harry Kane in the central attacking role, as he does for the Dutch national team.

Indeed, Jose Mourinho’s presence would help. Whilst the Portuguese was in charge at Manchester United when Depay left, the duo did so on amicable terms. Indeed, Depay confirmed to The Times that Mourinho hoped to one day buy him back whilst Mourinho told the Manchester Evening News that Depay was a ‘fantastic professional’.

“I said to Mourinho ‘you will see me at the top,’

“He said, ‘OK, I hope that and I hope we will buy you back one day.’ I never had a bad relationship with him.”

At just £30 million, he could be the cut-price multi-purpose forward option Tottenham have been craving for some time.
