Newcastle United failed with an ambitious loan bid for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye this month, according to a report from The Athletic.
The Magpies are continuing their push for new signings before the January transfer window closes. They have two players through the door. And they had been heavily linked with marquee targets such as Diego Carlos.

However, it does appear that further reinforcements are required. And Newcastle are, unsurprisingly, prepared to push the boat out further.
The Athletic reports that a number of ambitious loan signings have been targeted. And one of those Newcastle have made a move for is Gueye.

The 32-year-old has been a regular fixture in the PSG side this term. No player in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad has more tackles in the top flight this season than the midfielder, according to FB Ref.
Pochettino has labelled Gueye a ‘quality‘ player. And of course, it was his time at Everton that established the Senegal international as one of the best holding midfielders plying their trade in Europe.
That form prompted PSG to part with £29 million to bring him to Parc des Princes.
And it should probably come as no surprise that the Parisians had no interest in letting Gueye leave. The Athletic suggests that Newcastle’s loan bid has been unsuccessful.
Newcastle may be taking huge gamble continuing to pursue marquee targets amid Gueye interest
Signing Kieran Trippier was a coup. And bringing Chris Wood in could be a masterstroke. However, Newcastle have not yet managed to sign a world-class player coming into their peak.
Obviously, Gueye is edging towards the twilight of his career. But he is still performing at an incredibly high level. And signing him would have been a major statement.
But their lack of success perhaps highlights why the time may be right for Newcastle to consider a change of approach.
Of course, it may yet be that they do manage to stun the football world with a signing they make in the next 11 days. However, the deadline is looming.
If Newcastle do not make any more signings, they look to be in serious trouble.
So it would be a roll of the dice to continue pursuing some of the names at the top of their wishlist. Newcastle now need to prioritise the moves that are simply going to keep them in the Premier League.
Should they manage that, then signing those big names in the summer will become so, so much easier.
