Tottenham and West Ham have received a boost in their pursuit of Sam Johnstone, with a report from the Daily Mail providing an update on the goalkeeper’s future with West Brom.

Johnstone was a shining light as the Baggies were relegated from the Premier League last season. Nevertheless, the club managed to keep him at the Hawthorns.

There is interest. Reports last month claimed that Spurs are planning to make a bid for the England international.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail notes that the Hammers want Johnstone, while Southampton are also admirers.

Johnstone is out of contract next summer. But West Brom may have been hoping that securing promotion at the first time of asking may convince the 28-year-old to stay.

However, the latest reports on his future will encourage the likes of Tottenham and West Ham.

The Daily Mail claims that the Baggies are now resigned to losing him next summer.

And, while a January sale is unlikely, an offer approaching £10 million may be enough to convince the club to let him go.

Johnstone move could be shrewd business for Tottenham or West Ham

Both Spurs and the Hammers should be on the lookout for a new number one in the next couple of years.

Both Hugo Lloris and Lukasz Fabianski are into the twilights of their careers.

They have both impressed this season. However, Tottenham and West Ham would be foolish not to consider their plans when both have moved on.

Signing Johnstone on a free transfer therefore, could be a shrewd piece of business.

The good news is Johnstone’s club believe that he is indeed leaving for nothing next year.
