Report: Club may have no choice but to sell ‘fantastic’ Everton-linked 19-year-old

A player reportedly wanted by Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti could be sold by his club despite only signing a new contract days ago.

As reported by The Daily Star in January, the Toffees have been looking at Saint-Etienne defender Wesley Fofana.

The 19-year-old only made his senior debut in April 2019 but has since clocked up 25 appearances for the French side, scoring twice.

It looked as though Everton’s hopes of signing Fofana were dealt a killer blow on Tuesday when Saint-Etienne extended his contract until 2024 (GFFN).

However, Le10Sport claims that Saint-Etienne’s financial situation means the club may have no choice but to sell the centre-back if an offer comes in.

TBR View:

Fofana is a high-calibre played described by teammate Yohan Cabaye as “fantastic” and by GFFN as “the heir to William Saliba”, who is on his way to Arsenal in the summer.

Everton, meanwhile, could do with bolstering their defensive ranks, given Ancelotti has just three senior centre-backs in Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate.

The Toffees’ priority right now appears to be Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes, but as Le10Sport report, Leicester City and Chelsea are also in the race for the Brazilian.

However, given how impressive Fofana has been and how Saint-Etienne could reportedly still find themselves having to sell him, it’ll surely be food for thought for Ancelotti.
