Report: Club insiders don’t think Spurs can pay £40m for ‘one of the best players’ in his position

Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with Sporting CP’s Pedro Porro in recent weeks.

In November, Jornal de Noticias claimed Spurs were one of several clubs eyeing the right-back.

More recently, Correio da Manha – via Sport Witness – claimed Tottenham were ‘preparing to formalise’ an offer for Porro.

However, it looks as though Spurs may now be hesitating over a potential move for the 23-year-old.

A Bola – via Sport Witness – have reported that Tottenham are indeed fans of the player and have made approaches.

However, the Portuguese outlet claims Sporting insiders don’t believe Spurs can reach his €45m release clause (£40m) in January,

The Primeira Liga giants will only let Porro leave if a suitor meets his release clause.

In addition, A Bola claims Spurs are yet to submit a formal bid for the player.

‘He has the capacity’

Tottenham could certainly do with bolstering their right wing-back ranks.

Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal have been decent at times but haven’t shown themselves to be consistently world class.

Meanwhile, Antonio Conte doesn’t seem convinced about Djed Spence’s ability to start regularly just yet.

With that in mind, a new RWB is likely to be a priority, and Porro had been deemed ‘one of the best full-backs’ around.

Sporting boss Ruben Amorim recently told Record: “Everyone knows Porro now.

“It’s impossible not to look at him as one of the best full-backs. I’ve already mentioned the club’s idea to him.

“If they beat the clause it will be impossible, until then I hope to count on him. He has the capacity to take the ball forward.

“With Porro, our football already passes through him so much, we have to work without dramas, it would be difficult to replace him during the season.”

At the same time, Spurs will probably look to secure some outgoings first before bringing in fresh legs.

Perhaps Tottenham will look to move Emerson or Doherty on first. We’ll see what happens over the coming weeks.
