According to The Express, Arsenal have held direct talks with Benfica about a move for their Uruguayan striker, Darwin Nunez.

The Gunners are on the lookout for a prolific goalscorer this summer. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has already left, while Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are set to walk away at the end of their contracts.

Ideally, Arsenal will need two top-quality strikers, but Edu and Mikel Arteta need to make sure that they’ll be able to bring in at least one number nine before the start of next season.

It looks like Benfica’s Nunez is a player they really want to sign this summer.

Benfica tell Arsenal they are ready to sell Darwin Nunez

The report claims that after holding initial talks with Nunez’s agent Edgardo Lasalvia at the start of this year, Arsenal have now contacted Benfica to understand their demands.

The Portuguese giants have directly told the Gunners that they are ready to sell Nunez if their £67 million valuation is met. That sounds like a lot at first, but Benfica are willing to make it easy for Arsenal to get a deal over the line.

It has been claimed that Arteta’s side have been told that a deal to sign Nunez can include structured, respectable instalments. This means, they can pay the £67 million fee over a period of a few years, which makes it a fairly easy transfer to complete.

However, Manchester United and Tottenham are also in the race to sign Nunez and they will be offered the same terms by Benfica as well.

More goals than Erling Haaland

If you go around different top clubs in the world and ask fans to name the one striker they’d love to see their side sign in the summer, most of them would pick Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian is arguably the hottest property in world football at the moment. He has scored 23 goals and has provided six assists in all competitions this season, which is an incredible return for a 21-year-old.

Nunez, who is about 11 months older than Haaland, has scored 28 goals and has provided three assists in all competitions this campaign.

It’s no surprise that the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester United are keen to sign him, and it’s likely that he’ll be a huge success wherever he ends up.
