Report: Club have discussed four-year deal with Arsenal's 'huge talent'
Roma are set to take Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan without an option or obligation to buy despite discussing a four-year deal with the Arsenal man, according to a report from ESPN.
Maitland-Niles has been heavily linked with the Emirates exit this month. And for some time, it had appeared that the Italian capital may end up proving to be his destination.
Arsenal fans would be forgiven for expecting Maitland-Niles’ loan to include some kind of clause for the summer. The 24-year-old has had a number of false dawns with the Gunners. And having struggled for game-time this term, a loan that led to a permanent exit would have made a lot of sense.
Certainly, the Giallorossi were prepared to keep him beyond this season. ESPN reports that they had discussed handing the midfielder a four-year deal.
Arsenal however, have seemingly put a block on the England international agreeing future terms. The report suggests that Maitland-Niles is currently set to leave without an option or obligation to buy.
The move could go through in the next 24 hours. Maitland-Niles meanwhile, is looking set to return when he will only have 12 months left on his contract.
Arsenal will be vindicated if Ainsley Maitland-Niles impresses at Roma
Previous reports had suggested that Roma wanted to agree an £8.4 million option. And that may have seemed like a reasonable price in light of the season Maitland-Niles has had so far.
However, the academy graduate clearly has a lot of potential. Arteta described him as a huge talent earlier this season.
His value could rise considerably should he impress at Roma. He would not be the first English player to shine after swapping the Premier League for Serie A in recent years.
Arsenal look to be making a smart move. They will be able to demand a lot more in the summer should he do well. And other clubs may put themselves in the running.
It is still hard to see Maitland-Niles making the grade at Arsenal. But the Gunners may benefit from keeping their options open.
