Report: Club have contacted Leeds boss Bielsa and reportedly imminent Everton boss Benitez in their hunt for a new manager
Turkish newspaper Sabah claim that Fenerbahce have been in talks with a list of seven high-profile managers. Among those names spoken to by Fenerbahce are Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, as well as Rafa Benitez – who is on the verge of becoming Everton boss. An announcement will be made by president Ali Koc on Monday.
Fener missed out on the SuperLig title last season by just two points, but still finished back in third place. Besiktas pipped Galatasaray to the title on goal difference. Now planning to go two better and finish top, Fener want a big-name manager in charge to excite fans and give them some momentum.
Seven names have been spoken to. Leeds boss Bielsa and soon-to-be Everton boss Benitez included, as well as Marco Silva, Paulo Fonseca, Andre Villas-Boas, Lucien Favre and Slaven Bilic. All have held talks, but Bilic was the front runner. But Chinese side Beijing Guaon hae blocked a move.
Who will take over at Fenerbahce? Leeds and Everton should be safe, with Bielsa and Benitez staying put
While Bielsa is out of contract this week, it is widely believed he will put pen to paper at Elland Road. Even CEO Angus Kinnear has stated that Bielsa will remain, and he finds signing a new deal as an “irrelevance”. Meanwhile, Everton are close to getting Benitez, despite a fan backlash.
A new manager is likely to be announced at Fenerbahce on Monday, but Leeds and Everton should still have Bielsa and Benitez in charge. Of the seven that have been linked, Fonseca, Favre, Villas-Boas and Silva are out of work. They are much more likely to be handed the job in the coming days.
