Report: Club eager to retain 'brilliant' maestro eyed by Aston Villa; he’s yet to sign a new deal
Watford are reportedly eager to keep hold of Will Hughes this summer with Aston Villa ramping up the interest in the 26-year-old.
According to the Express, the Villains are eager to sign a central midfielder this summer. And Hughes has emerged as a target for the Birmingham club.
As per the report, Watford want to tie Hughes down to a new deal, but the former Derby star is yet to put pen on paper.
Indeed, this could play well into Villa’s hands. As per the report, Dean Smith is keen on signing the Vicarage Road star. Hughes has just one year left on his current contract with the Hertfordshire side.
Villa have been linked to Southampton star James Ward-Prowse this summer. However, the Saints will likely retain their set-piece wizard with Danny Ings set to leave the south coast club this window.
Although Ward-Prowse would have been a good addition to Villa’s squad, Hughes will also bring some extra that Smith’s side have been lacking over the past two seasons.
Former Hornets manager Nigel Pearson labelled the 26-year-old maestro as ‘brilliant’ following his performance in a 2-0 win over Manchester United via the Watford Observer.
And Hughes could bring some extra stability and fluidity to the midfield alongside John McGinn.
The midfielder can operate in multiple roles. And with Aston Villa looking to challenge for a top-half finish next season, Hughes and his versatility would be key if Smith and his team can get a deal over the line for the Watford star.
