Report: Club chief tells Tottenham to pay £34m for ‘outstanding’ rumoured target wanted by PL rival

Max Eberl has told Bild that Borussia Monchengladbach would be willing to listen to offers for Jonas Hofmann this summer amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

The Bundesliga outfit do not want to lose the 28-year-old. But they are aware they cannot rule out a deal in the current environment brought on by the pandemic.

Hofmann has emerged as a summer transfer target for Tottenham plus their London and Premier League rivals Chelsea, per Kicker. The German enters the summer following his best season at Borussia-Park, and a move to England is possible.

Spurs’ scouts watched Hofmann in action numerous times last term as he developed into a key player under Marco Rose. The winger also has interest from La Liga, after scoring nine times and offering 13 assists in 33 appearances.

Celtic fans left short-changed by Sky Sports once again

But as there is not a release clause in Hofmann’s contract, Ebrel will demand a big sum to sell.

“We live in a time when you can’t rule anything out,” Monchengladbach Sporting Director Eberl said. “We certainly don’t want to sell Jonas. But if at some point a club is offering €40million (£34m) for Jonas, we can’t say we’re not interested.”

Hofmann is under contract at Borussia-Park until 2023 on an extension penned in 2019, three years after joining from Borussia Dortmund.

TBR’s view: Hofmann too expensive for Tottenham

Eberl stating Hofmann would cost around £34m could make the Borussia Monchengladbach winger too expensive for Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy. The Spurs chief pulled the plug on appointing Antonio Conte as he wanted a £100m budget, per The Sun.

To spend a third of what Conte requested on Hofmann is very questionable, even though he has much to offer. The German is a versatile player who can create and score goals from the right, left and through the centre.

He also scores against top teams with a brace against Bayern Munich and strikes against Wolfsburg and Frankfurt last season. Hofmann even scored against Inter Milan in the Champions League and bounced straight back after a muscle tear in November.

His performances have been at a high level for a number of years, as well. Former Monchengladbach boss hailed Hofmann for delivering ‘outstanding’ performances via Bundesliga.com during his time at Borussia-Park in 2019. Displays that probably will not be on their way to north London this summer.
