Many Leeds United fans will have been wondering how Victor Orta pulled off a deal to sign teenage starlet Ian Poveda on a free transfer from Manchester City this month – and the Manchester Evening News have explained the clauses in the deal.
Poveda, 19, became Leeds’ second January signing after goalkeeper Elia Caprile. The England Under-20 international has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal to remain with Leeds until the summer of 2024.
The MEN have claimed Leeds have got Poveda without having to pay an initial transfer fee – with the winger’s contract expiring in the summer. You would have been forgiven for thinking that such a move would still require some payment this month.
But it is in the clauses and sell-on fee where Leeds will eventually pay for Poveda. The MEN’s report claims Leeds have included sizeable clauses that equal £1million for Poveda – while there is also a 30% sell-on clause.
That last clause is quite considerable – given that if Leeds sell Poveda for £10million in the future, City will rake in £3million. However, there is no buyback clause in the deal, something which will benefit Leeds.

TBR’s view – Have Leeds got a good deal for Poveda?
At the end of the day, Leeds have signed a very exciting talent that has enough quality to have played for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in a Carabao Cup final – for an initial fee of nothing.
Even the add-ons equalling £1million is cheap, while the non-inclusion of a buyback clause benefits Leeds, as City are unable to re-sign the player for a fixed price. What may affect Leeds is that selling Poveda will see City receive a hefty chunk of the deal.
