Report claims that Shkodran Mustafi is up for sale at Arsenal

A report from The Sun has claimed that Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi will be allowed to leave the club before the transfer window closes.

In a piece explaining some of the ins and outs that could happen before the deadline, Mustafi is one of five Arsenal players who are considered to be up for sale.

The World Cup-winning centre-back is alongside Sokratis, Lucas Torreira, Calum Chambers and Sead Kolasinac as being deemed surplus.

Mustafi checked in at the Emirates Stadium in 2016, costing the Gunners £35 million from La Liga outfit Valencia (BBC).

The 28-year-old has played 142 games for Arsenal helping the club to two FA Cups during his time in North London.

He has struggled for consistency though and with Mikel Arteta adding Gabriel Magalhaes to his ranks, his first-team opportunities look limited.

Arsenal are trying to raise some funds in order to complete the final pieces of their squad before the window closes.

Whether or not they can ship Mustafi out remains to be seen but he’d probably fetch a significant amount if he was to leave.

The man with 20 caps for Germany is paid £90,000-a-week at the Emirates and getting him off the books could prove ideal for Arsenal.

Gabriel looks like being a starter following his £23 million move from Lille, whilst Rob Holding has apparently impressed Arteta during pre-season.

David Luiz is popular in the eyes of Arteta too and that means Mustafi is down the pecking order.

TBR View – Selling Mustafi looks wise

Arsenal are moving away from an erratic brand of defending and although Luiz is still in place, the club should seriously look to get Mustafi out of the club.

The German has always proved himself as a model professional but he’s quite simply no longer good enough for the Gunners.

Gabriel looks like a decent signing and at 29, heading out and playing regular football looks like a good thing for all parties – not least Mustafi.
