Football.London has become the latest source to report that Tottenham Hotspur are pushing ahead with a move for Tanguy Ndombele. They suggest that ‘talks are already underway regarding a move’ for the 22-year-old star.
Ndombele himself spoke highly of Tottenham over the weekend, as reported by Telefoot.
“It’s true that Tottenham are a great team – a big club. They finished fourth in their league, they were finalists in the Champions League.
“They are a big club like many others. Which player would not be interested in a big club?”
It comes less than a week after The Guardian reported on Tottenham’s interest in Ndombele. They suggested Mauricio Pochettino informed chairman Daniel Levy that the Frenchman is ‘precisely the type of player’ that he wants at Tottenham this summer.
With Tottenham still lacking the physical presence Mousa Dembele offered in midfield and Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama woefully out of form, it is no wonder Ndombele is high up the list.
But here comes the problem. As per usual with Tottenham, it boils down to the finances.
The Guardian suggest a £66.6 million price-tag on Ndombele. Levy is said to value him more in the region of £44.5 million.
This is as good a test as any regarding whether Levy is serious about backing Pochettino at Tottenham.
It seems that the Argentine has taken this current set of players as far as possible. Improvements need to be made if they are to sustain this level of success under Pochettino’s guidance.
Levy must back Pochettino now or risk giving the Argentine a reason to start thinking about his long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur. Forget the players, the 47-year-old is the most important asset for Tottenham’s future success.
So if talks are underway, Ndombele seems keen and the asking price is £66.6 million for a player Pochettino desperately wants, Levy simply has to make it happen.
