Report claims Spurs sold Toby Alderweireld for £3m
Spurs fans are unlikely to be best pleased with a report from The Sun which has made a surprise claim concerning the fee the club received in the sale of Toby Alderweireld.
Alderweireld brought the curtain down on a fantastic six-year spell with Spurs this week. It was announced that he had moved to Qatar to join Al-Duhail.
Unfortunately, Alderweireld had not been at his best last season. So receiving £13 million for a 32-year-old who looked to be past his peak looked to be a good deal from Spurs.
However, the fans’ view on the transfer may soon change.
The Sun is now reporting that Spurs have actually only been paid £3 million for the centre-back.
Tottenham selling Alderweireld for £3m fee a much more questionable decision
Of course, £13 million is not a game-changing amount of money for a club like Spurs anyway.
The biggest boost is probably offloading Alderweireld’s wages. According to Spotrac, he was earning £80,000-a-week in North London.
However, a £3 million fee would surely raise the question over whether it was worth selling Alderweireld at all.
He had not been at his best last year. But he was still arguably Spurs’ best centre-back.
So it was not out of the question that he could have enjoyed a much better year next term.
A £13 million deal looks to make sense for all parties. If they have let him go for £3 million however, it is a lot more difficult to see what Spurs have really gained by moving him on.
