A surprise report from Calciomercato has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur made a serious attempt to sign Nicolo Barella from Inter Milan during the January transfer window.

It proved to be a quiet month for Spurs. Jose Mourinho did not bring a single new face to the club before the deadline passed.

But it appears that that may not have been his intention. Calciomercato reported in January that Tottenham were one of the sides keen on Barella.

And it is claimed that they acted upon their interest. Calciomercato is now suggesting that Spurs made a serious attempt to sign the 24-year-old.

However, it is noted that Inter were not willing to discuss a deal. And the report adds that they plan to take a similar stance in the summer.

It is no surprise to see clubs taking a look at Barella. The Italy international has been outstanding for the Nerazzurri this season. He has three goals and five assists for the league leaders.

And perhaps Tottenham did indeed register an interest during the window. However, it is difficult to see Spurs making a serious move.

Few clubs spent substantial money in January. And Barella’s asking price since his £45 million move to San Siro (via Football Italia) has surely only gone up considerably.

Spurs would have had an issue finding a place in their squad for a new signing. So while Barella would have the potential to be an outstanding addition, it is really difficult to imagine Tottenham confirming their interest with a bid.
