Report claims Spurs are not currently discussing new contract with Hugo Lloris

Tottenham Hotspur have put contract talks with a number of players on hold, with the London Evening Standard reporting that Hugo Lloris is one of those not currently in discussions with the club.

Spurs fans would be forgiven for expecting a number of contract announcements imminently. Fabrizio Romano claimed on his Here We Go podcast that Son Heung-min was close to extending his stay in North London.

Meanwhile, The Independent reported at the weekend that Tottenham had begun early talks with Harry Kane about his future.

However, it appears that it may be a little while before any announcements are made. The London Evening Standard reports that talks with the likes of Kane and Son are on hold.

It is noted that the financial impact of the pandemic is a key factor. And thus, they have put non-urgent talks on the back burner.

Interestingly, the London Evening Standard goes on to add that there are no talks going on with Lloris at the moment.

Lloris’s situation is a little more concerning. The Evening Standard reports that he is in the final 18 months of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And it is also noted that he is wanted by Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain.

TBR View: Spurs’ Lloris stance may divide opinion

It is really difficult to know whether Tottenham are making the right decision delaying talks with Lloris or not.

He remains the number one. And he has been excellent for much of this season. So it would be a boost to shut the door on the possibility of a future move to PSG.

Having said that, Lloris is now 34. And Spurs can largely ensure that he goes nowhere for the next 18 months regardless of what happens when they do discuss an extension.

He is on £100,000-a-week, according to Spotrac. So Tottenham may be wary of extending his contract only to see his form desert him further down the line.

Unfortunately, Lloris is reaching a stage in his career where Spurs will need to consider future replacements.

So, while there may be interest from elsewhere, delaying a decision on his future may prove a smart move.
