Report claims Spurs are interested in free agent Diego Costa

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Diego Costa with the striker now a free agent heading into the January transfer window, according to a report from Spanish outlet La Razon.

Costa’s departure from Atletico Madrid was announced on Tuesday. He had made two league starts for Diego Simeone’s side this season, and scored twice in the top flight.

The 32-year-old has struggled to replicate the form that he showed when at his best at Chelsea. But given his availability, it is difficult to imagine the January window closing without the striker receiving a significant number of offers.

And according to La Razon, Jose Mourinho is one of the managers keen on signing Costa.

Mourinho, of course, managed the Spain international at Stamford Bridge. So it is arguably little surprise that he has been linked with the forward.

It will be interesting to see whether the links become more serious in the coming weeks. But it would be no surprise if the reports divided some of the Spurs fans.

Costa has had his critics throughout his career. And he is edging towards the twilight of his playing days off the back of a really disappointing spell in Spain.

On the other hand, he would arrive on a free transfer. And he has previously enjoyed success under Mourinho. He scored 20 Premier League goals in his first season in England.

Spurs clearly do not need a first-choice striker. And in fairness, Carlos Vinicius has done little wrong since arriving on loan. But maybe Mourinho may wonder if signing Costa may be worthwhile with Tottenham still battling on several fronts.
