Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is likely to know there will be interest in some of his players this summer. The two Ibrox stars that immediately spring to mind are goalscoring strike sensation Alfredo Morelos and captain James Tavernier.
It now seems that Newcastle United are keen on the latter.
As reported by the Daily Mail, new Toon boss Steve Bruce has made Tavernier one of his first targets at St James’ Park.
The report even states that Rangers have a fee they would struggle to turn down. It states the Glasgow club ‘may have to consider’ bids in the region of £8 million for the defender.
Tavernier is, of course, a former Newcastle player. The 27-year-old joined the Magpies from Leeds United as a teenager and spent six years signed with the club.
Rangers will not want to lose the player this summer, who is a key component of Steven Gerrard’s starting XI.
Tavernier is the club’s captain but offers much more than just leadership. Last season, he scored 17 goals and provided 20 assists from a right-back position. He already has two assists from his one Europa League qualifying appearance this season.
But Rangers, it seems, may struggle to say no to an £8 million offer for the player, which does seem low considering his stats at Ibrox.
Time will tell if Gerrard and Rangers can fight off the interest in their captain fantastic.
